How expensive is a sprinkler system?
Sprinkler systems are actually quite inexpensive--about the same cost of carpeting. (Prices vary according to the type of building, water supply, and other factors.) Studies have shown that the cost of installing fire sprinklers in commercial buildings actually pays for itself in about 5 years due to reductions in insurance premiums, not to mention the reduction of property loss due to fire.
Why are sprinklers so ugly?
Sprinkler technology has changed a lot in recent years, and now fire sprinklers are available that are unobtrusive and blend into a building's design. Pipes are hidden behind walls and ceilings, and modern sprinklers can be mounted almost flush with walls or ceilings or even concealed.
Isn't the water damage from sprinklers worse than the fire?
A sprinkler will actually control a fire with a tiny fraction of the water used by fire department hoses, primarily because it acts much earlier. Since sprinklers only work in the immediate vicinity of the fire to keep it from spreading, widespread damage is avoided. And accidental discharge from sprinklers is extremely rare--1 in 16,000,000 sprinklers per year.
