Isn't a smoke detector in my home enough?
A smoke detector is the minimal equipment to ensure the safety of your family from fire. But a smoke detector only alerts you that there is a fire in your home. A fire sprinkler system can extinguish a fire in the beginning stages, saving lives and property.
But then I'd have those ugly things all over my house.
Fire sprinkler technology has advanced to improve sprinkler aesthetics (if you even see them at all). They can be concealed out of sight and are available in a wide range of sizes and color to blend into almost any room.
What about water damage?
During a fire, only the sprinkler(s) closest to the fire are activated. This limits the total amount of water to only that which is needed to suppress the fire. The water delivery from a fire department hose is usually ten to a hundred times greater.
Isn't a sprinkler system prohibitively expensive?
The cost of a sprinkler system depends on several factors, but they are generally only $1.90 to $3.50 per square foot average cost--about the same as carpeting. (The actual cost depends upon the type of construction and can vary considerably.) And aside from the property and life-saving benefits, many insurance companies offer a discount to homeowners who have a sprinkler system installed--generally 13%. A sprinkler system can pay for itself.
